Clean energy for sure is the future and hydrogen fuel cells will definitely be one of them. Hydrogen energy possesses the features of zero greenhouse gas emissions and high efficiency in generating electricity. Besides, when it comes to vehicles, hydrogen fuel cells are fast refueling and provide a longer range of driving than gasoline. While hydrogen performs well as a fuel, it presents a greater explosion hazard than many other liquid and gas fuels. The adoption of hydrogen as an energy source therefore requires strong safety measures, including the deployment of reliable hydrogen detection and monitoring systems.
Securing the hydrogen storage facilities
To popularize the use of hydrogen fuel cells, the infrastructure is essential. Most important of all, safety is the top priority. Deploying purpose-built anti-explosion gateways for real-time monitoring and reaction is indispensable in hydrogen fuel cell infrastructure such as storage facilities and hydrogen stations to detect leaks or any potential risks.
Our Value
Axiomtek’s ICO300-83M is an anti-explosion gateway with ATEX and C1D2 certification which is compliant with the safety standards of hazardous working environments. The ICO300-83M can be connected to various kinds of sensors to detect any leaks or abnormal pressure thanks to rich I/O. With real-time response from isolation DIO, the gateway can trigger the valves or warning systems to ensure the environment is a safe workplace. Even when an accident happens, operators can be notified and act right away to prevent chain reactions and protect personnel and properties.
ICO300-83M anti-explosion gateway guards the hazardous field sites
To prevent hydrogen leaks from causing an explosion, an anti-explosion gateway that has specific safeguards in place to prevent sparks or other potential sources of ignition from causing an explosion or fire is a must-have for hydrogen storage facilities. Also, with Intel Atom® x5-E3930/x5-E3940 processor, isolated COM, LAN and isolated DIO, the ICO300-83M possesses the computing capability and I/O for automated reaction to mitigate accidents.
Isolated COM and DIO
The ICO300-83M has six isolated COM ports. Today a variety of sensors transmit real-time data via CAN or COM; for example, once the hydrogen leaks accidentally, the sensor transmits the information of abnormal gas concentration to the gateway and the information has been analyzed. The gateway can then ring the alarm via DIO. The ICO300-83M is equipped with an isolated DIO (8-in/8-out) to control devices such as alarms.
Wireless Connectivity
The ICO300-83M has an M.2 Key B 3052 slot and a full-size PCI Express Mini Card slot along with dual SIM sockets to support 4G LTE and five antenna openings. This can help the remote control center or war room monitor the field site's operational status in a timely manner.
Visualizing Processes, Real-time Monitoring, and Remote Control with HMI
HMI is a must-have in a hazardous field site. The visualized information allows on-site operators to have a clear overview of the facility's status, making it easier to identify and respond to any potential safety situations with various parameters. Moreover, for safety concerns, the HMI can also be deployed from a safe distance to monitor and control.

Various screen sizes to choose from
For this new generation of touch panel PCs, Axiomtek provides three screen sizes to choose from for different field site spaces. The GOT815A-TGL-WCD has a 15.6" screen; the GOT821A-TGL-WCD has a 21.5" one, while the screen size of the GOT818A-TGL-WCD is 18.5", all with FHD resolutions for decent user experience.
Facility Monitoring and Payment Processing for Hydrogen Stations
With a powerful edge computer, at a hydrogen station, operators can run the program of the facility and payment management in a single system.
Our Value
Simplifying is the trend now to lower the cost and speed up the deployment, making the most use of the edge system. A well-designed system with rich I/O is able to manage multiple applications, being used as the facility monitoring gateway and payment processing platform. With a versatile and flexible design with large storage, various wireless module expansions, and rich I/O interfaces, the ICO520 would be an excellent choice.
An ICO520 can replace multiple old systems for management applications
In the use case of a hydrogen station, an edge computer has to perform the functions of an on-site gateway and payment processing platform at the same time. Much like the storage facility, it needs to connect with sensors in the charging system, to calculate the charging volume, control the valve, and detect the leak.
High-performance & Rich I/O
With a 12th Gen Intel® Core™ processor, the ICO520 can employ two functions to save the cost and simplify the deploying architecture. The rich I/O is also a key to achieving this. Providing four isolated COM ports and two USB ports, it can bind both monitoring and payment devices like a pressure sensor, a gas calculation sensor, an RFID reader, and a credit card reader. What’s more, having two display ports is an edge. One screen is for showing information to car owners like charging instructions, while the other one leaves for maintenance personnel. Even though the data processed by the ICO520 can be monitored remotely, when on-site maintenance is needed, the second display port allows maintenance personnel to display the configuration environment.
As the shift to clean energy accelerates, hydrogen fuel cells lead sustainable solutions. Safety is paramount due to hydrogen's flammability. The ICO300-83M, with ATEX and C1D2 certification, enables real-time risk detection and disaster prevention. The GOT815A-TGL-WCD, C1D2 certified with a dashboard, enhances safety in hazardous environments. The ICO520, a high-performance edge computer, revolutionizes hydrogen stations, integrating gateway and payment functions. These technologies promise a future powered by safe, efficient, and sustainable hydrogen energy.
